Detailed Description
The Lord Mayor of Leeds serves as the “first citizen” and ceremonial figurehead of the city, acting as an ambassador for Leeds by engaging with citizens, welcoming dignitaries, and supporting community initiatives. This role is non-political and focuses on diplomacy, charity, and representing the city’s values.
For several years, Luminate Education Group has proudly served on the Lord Mayor’s Charity Committee, helping to support Leeds’ third-sector organisations through responsible community stewardship, sponsorships, and events that raise funds and awareness for important causes.
We are happy to introduce the current Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, the first African woman to hold the office. Originally from Zaria, Nigeria, Abigail pursued higher education in the UK and has become a dedicated community leader in Leeds. Elected to Leeds City Council in 2019, she has held various influential roles and continues to champion causes such as equality, education, and community cohesion. She is deeply honoured to represent Leeds and its diverse communities.
This year, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung has chosen Leeds Community Foundation as recipient of the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal.
Leeds Community Foundation is on a mission to create “a fairer Leeds for everyone” by distributing vital grants and providing trusted advice to community organisations across Leeds and Bradford. As the region’s largest independent funder, they work with hundreds of local organisations each year, driving meaningful social impact and addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable and marginalised communities.
We are thrilled to announce our first fundraiser in support of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity Leeds Community Foundation.
