Course Description

The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first-aider and how to assess an incident. The qualification also covers first-aid skills in CPR and use of an AED, providing first aid to a casualty who is choking, and dealing with external bleeding and hypovolaemic shock.

3 Consecutive Days

Course Location 

Face to Face Training at Rothwell Centre, Leeds, LS26 0AG - Free Parking available around the building and EV charging points (at a cost)

Course units/modules

Part 1 Foundation- Emergency First Aid at Work– 6 hrs

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the First Aider
  • Be able to assess and incident
  • Be able to provide First Aid to an unresponsive casualty (use of AED, CPR, Recovery Position, Seizure)
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries (burns and scalds, small cuts, grazes, bruises, small splinters)

Part 2- Complex: Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace– 12 hrs

  • Be able to conduct a secondary survey
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to casualty with suspected chest injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury (dust, chemicals, embedded objects)
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness ( stroke, asthma attack, diabetic, heart attack)

Entry requirements

We recommend learners are a minimum of 16 years of age. Learners, whatever their age, are physically capable of completing the practical assessment. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in English.

Assessment types

This qualification is assessed by a practical demonstration and a multiple-choice theory test
